Grinders For Coffee Beans

To make the freshest cup of coffee possible, it is best that you grind the beans yourself. Grinding process after roasting is an important step which will determine how the coffee will taste later on. During the grinding process you determine how coarse or how fine you would like to grind the coffee to. The choice of how fine or coarse depends on how you intend to make your cup of coffee.

Also there are some effects on the coffee beans during the grinding process. The coffee beans will pick up heat and the more heat your coffee beans pick up the more adversely it will affect the final product.The final result of your coffee depends a lot on how evenly it is ground and the final temperature after grinding. The other effect during grinding is that static charges are built up too. This causes ground coffee to stick to any surfaces making it very messy. Inorder to minimize these effects choosing the right grinder is important.

On how fine one should grind the coffee beans, the following below can serve as a guide.

  • French Press : Very Coarse
  • Drip Coffee : Coarse
  • Espresso machine : Fine
  • Turkish Coffee : Very fine

Now moving on to the grinders, there are several types of grinder in the market and generally they are catergorised into the following

1) High Speed, Low Speed or Gear reduction. This depends on how the electric motors attached to the grinding parts.The high speed types have the electric motors attached directly to the grinding parts. This is also known as direct drive and sometimes low speed grinders utilize this design too. In gear reduction types, the motors do not connect directly to the grinding parts but through a set of gears.

2)The grinders may be Burr or Blade type. The workings are different amount the two. A blade grinder chops up the coffee beans while burr grinder crushes the coffee beans. Burr grinders are further divided into flat burr or conical burr.

3)Dosing or Non-Dosing. Dosing types basically are where grinded coffee are collected into coffee containers that contained sections or compartment. The ground coffee are dispense with a pull of a handle. In non dosing types, the ground coffee goes directly into the coffee receptacle of the coffee maker or to a container, depending on one's wish.

4)Stepped or Stepless. These are just how the manufacturer design there grind adjusment for their grinder. Stepped grinders have preset spots for grind setting and once selected the setting is "locked". In stepless grinder there are no preset spots, thus there is an infinite number that one can adjust ones grind to.

Buying tips

  • Look for low speed grinders as high speed grinders produces more hat and static charges.
  • Highly recommended to go for Burr grinders. Burr grinders grinds are more consistent as compared to blade grinders. Blade grinders are usually high speed types and the disadvantages of high speed ginders are mentioned previously.
  • Stepped grinders are more porpular with more choices of grinders to select from.
  • On dosing or non-dosing, this is a matter of personal preference.Should one likes the conveniece of premeasured amount of coffee with every dispense than the dosing type would be appropiate.
